We ordered breakfast and were approached by a man who asked if he could take a photo of Ben and me for his phlog. He talked about the importance of today being a day of rememberance for those who were killed in WWII (with tomorrow being Liberation Day) and said that he would like to take a picture of us because we are Jewish and we looked beautiful together. (What a compliment!!) He gave us his card, told us about what he remembered from the day the Germans invaded Holland, and pointed us in the direction of a statue in honor of the people who died in the war. After breakfast, that's the first place we went. Then, we took the tram to the area where Anne Frank's House is located. On the way I met a Jewish woman who was visiting Amsterdam from London (with her relatives from Philadelphia). She struck up a conversation and gave us some great tips--including going to see Keukenhof to see the tulips.
Josh agrees with the guidebook which states that the Anne Frank House is poignant. I don't know what else to write about it, except that it reminded me of a poem written by Jean Little called "Being Jewish" about a Jewish girl who read all of these intellectual books to "feel" Jewish, but felt the most connected to her Judiasm after reading the Diary of Anne Frank. Then her best friend, who isn't Jewish, reads it and says the diary made her feel Jewish too.
After the Anne Frank House we walked through the Red Light District among other places and ended up at a sweet little cafe called Gartine. We had a light dinner and delicious dessert--Josh had white chocolate cheesecake and I had a lavendar cupcake with homemade blueberry jam. We were all ready to skip dessert, but the cafe serves high tea and they women next to us were enjoying a plate with a sampling of the desserts...
